Description
This painting came to me as most of my paintings do, in a dream.
The subject of being unequally yoked in a relationship had been weighing heavily on my mind. When you place yourself in a position to be in a relationship with somebody, you are in effect putting a yoke around your neck and hooking yourself to that person. There are so many ways in which that yoking can be unequal; spiritual goals, intellectual interests, recreational interests, parenting styles, family goals, unresolved relationship or family of origin issues, differing core beliefs, and the list could go on.
Some of these areas of inequality can be bridged, and some of them cannot. When you hook your heart to somebody and then realize that there are areas that not only cannot be bridged, but leave you carrying a yoke so heavy that it begins to damage your person, the feelings of being trapped, hopeless, alone, unseen and unloved can be devastating.
In this painting....
The symbol of the yoke as referenced in the Bible as a goal for having a partnership that is equal on all levels and a visual representation of what happens when you're carrying the yoke alone for whatever reason.
A nod to the hope I have to try to believe Jesus when He said "take my yoke upon you...and ye shall find rest until your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."
The visual similarities to holding a cross.
The circle for eternity.
The fig leaf for the garden of Eden and the introduction of shame into the human experience and also referencing LDS temple ceremony symbolism.
