Learning more about the history of the church I grew up in and how it impacted this state we all live in has been both shattering and liberating. As with all things on this earth, there are many truths believed and experienced by many people. Sometimes those truths do not agree with each other, but that does not invalidate the truth of those experiences and beliefs.
This painting came together as I studied those opposing truths, watched racial tensions unfold, and was party to the protest around removing original Minerva Teichert murals from the LDS Manti Temple.
The painting is my attempt to honor Teichert as a woman and artist, my pioneer ancestors who believed they were living a miracle, indigenous peoples of the area who understood the land and its’ patterns but had it all taken from them, and the original black “saints” who didn’t live to see their promised blessings.
Each living a truth.
I am an artist, teacher, and single mom of four boys, florist, gardener, and keeper of chickens, not necessarily in that order depending on the day. During the day I work as a sign artist for Harmons Grocery. At night I am a portrait and figurative artist. I enjoy exploring what makes my subject, whether human, animal or plant, tick; discovering the subjects unique connection to the world around us, both spiritual and physical, and exposing hidden beauty, sadness, and humor. I enjoy the flexibility of working in many mediums and believe this allows me to capture the special nature of each subject. I often use my artwork as a form of therapy and healing and do a lot of self-portrait work.
